Shipping Sealant Internationally: Compliance Checklist for Importers
A container of sealant held at customs for ten days is not a logistics problem — it is a lost customer. Shipping sealant internationally involves more than freight rates, and importers who skip the compliance checklist pay for it at the border. Here is what to verify before every shipment.
1. HS Codes: Get Them Right the First Time
Silicone sealants typically fall under HS 3214 or 3910 depending on the formulation and country. Wrong classification means wrong duty, delays and sometimes penalties. Confirm the code with your forwarder before booking — and check whether your buyer’s country applies anti-dumping duties on Chinese sealant exports.
2. Dangerous Goods: Know If You Are Shipping DG
Some solvent-based sealants and certain additives classify as dangerous goods (UN 1866 is common for adhesive-type products). If DG, the shipment needs certified packaging, DG labelling and a trained signatory for the DG declaration. Silicone and MS sealants are often non-DG — confirm with the manufacturer’s SDS, not by assumption.
3. Documentation: The Four Must-Haves
Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin cover 90% of customs requests. For EU buyers add CE/DoP documents; for many African and Middle Eastern markets add a pre-shipment inspection certificate. Missing one document costs days, not hours.
4. Incoterms: Decide Who Owns the Risk
FOB, CIF, EXW — each shifts responsibility for freight, insurance and clearance. For first shipments to a new market, CIF with full insurance gives your buyer less to worry about. For repeat orders, let the buyer’s forwarder handle destination-side clearance to speed delivery.
5. Temperature in Transit: Sealant Is Not Cargo
Sealant does not need a reefer container, but it does need to avoid extremes: keep containers out of prolonged direct sun at the terminal, and advise buyers in hot climates to unload promptly. A week in a 45°C container can shorten shelf life by months.
