Mastering Cold Weather Adhesive Application

Winter doesn’t have to mean the end of your construction or renovation projects. However, applying adhesives and sealants in cold weather requires special attention. At Shandong Silicon New Material, we want to ensure your projects succeed, no matter the season. Here are our top tips for cold-weather application and storage.
1. Proper Storage is Paramount
Cold temperatures can significantly alter the consistency and performance of adhesives. When adhesives get too cold, they can thicken, solidify, or even become unusable .
Keep them warm: Store your adhesives in a heated enclosure or a “hot box” when ambient temperatures are expected to fall below 40°F (4°C) for an extended period .
Thaw slowly: If adhesives have been stored in the cold, bring them to room temperature gradually for at least 24 hours before use. Do not use heat guns or heated jackets, as localized heating can cause a complete loss of reactivity . Once restored to room temperature, the material will perform as intended.
2. Master the Application Technique
Cold weather affects not just the adhesive, but also the materials you’re bonding.
Let materials relax: When working with materials like rolled membranes or vinyl sheets, allow them to relax and warm up for 30 minutes or longer before applying adhesive. This reduces stress on the freshly formed bond .
Check coverage: Achieve the proper coverage rate as specified on the product data sheet. Avoid applying too heavily, as cold conditions can slow solvent evaporation, potentially leading to blisters .
Perform the “Tack Test”: Ensure solvents have flashed off before bonding. In cold or shaded areas, this will take longer. If the adhesive isn’t tacky to the touch, it’s not ready .
3. Consider Temperature-Tolerant Formulations
For installations in areas subject to extreme cold or temperature fluctuations—such as unheated garages, conservatories, or exterior applications—it’s advisable to use a temperature-tolerant adhesive. These products are specially formulated to develop and maintain high bond strength even when temperatures drop, preventing materials from tenting or de-bonding due to expansion and contraction .
At Shandong Silicon New Material, we offer a range of adhesives suitable for various climate conditions. Our team is always available to help you select the right product and provide guidance for your specific application challenges.
