Silicone Sealant Shelf Life and Storage: What Distributors Need to Know
A cartridge of silicone sealant that sits on a shelf for two years is not the same product it was on day one. Silicone sealant shelf life storage mistakes are one of the most common — and most preventable — causes of distributor complaints. Here is what every stockist needs to know.
1. What “Shelf Life” Actually Means
For unopened cartridges, standard shelf life is 9-12 months from production date under proper conditions. The expiry date on the label is based on storage at or below 27°C — every month above that shortens usable life. Check the production date, not just the printed expiry.
2. The Three Storage Killers
Heat, moisture and direct sunlight degrade sealant chemistry. Store cartridges below 27°C in a dry, shaded area, and keep them off concrete floors (moisture migrates through the carton). Never store near solvents or fuel — vapour contamination ruins cure.
3. Cold Storage: A Double-Edged Sword
Below 5°C, some neutral-cure silicones can partially cure in the cartridge or form skin at the nozzle. If you store cold, bring cartridges to room temperature for 24 hours before use. Refrigerated stock is fine — frozen is not.
4. Stock Rotation: Your First Line of Defence
Implement FIFO (first in, first out) with visible date coding on every shelf. A distributor that ships old stock to save a few dollars converts a minor write-off into a customer complaint and a chargeback.
5. How to Check If Old Stock Is Still Good
Squeeze a small amount: fresh sealant flows smoothly and skins over in the expected time. Stiff, stringy or already-cured product is dead stock — sell it at cost as a one-off, or write it off. Your reputation is worth more than the margin.
