Structural Sealant vs Weatherproof Sealant: What Specifiers Must Know

They come in the same cartridge, look identical in the tube, and both are silicone. But structural sealant and weatherproof sealant perform fundamentally different roles — and using one where the other is required is the most expensive mistake a project can make. Compare the 8000 structural silicone sealant with the 8700 curtain wall weatherproof sealant to see the two roles clearly.

1. Structural Sealant: The Load Carrier
Structural sealant does what its name says — it structures. It transfers wind load and the dead weight of glass panels to the aluminum framing system. In framed, semi-framed, and hidden-frame curtain walls, this sealant is the primary mechanical connection. In China it must meet GB 16776-2005, which specifies tensile properties, adhesion, and UV durability for structural glazing use. Never substitute a weatherproof grade where structural bonding is required.
2. Weatherproof Sealant: The Shield
Weatherproof (weather-resistant) sealant seals joints against rain, air, and dust ingress. It does not carry structural loads, but it must accommodate building movement — typically Class 20 to 50 movement capability. It protects the building envelope and keeps insulation performance intact. Its failure mode is leakage and cracking, not structural collapse, but it still demands the correct grade and joint design.

3. The Critical Differences
Structural grades are tested for higher tensile strength, adhesion on glass and aluminum without primer, and long-term UV performance under load. Weatherproof grades prioritize elongation and movement accommodation. A structural grade can often seal a joint, but a weatherproof grade can never carry a load. If in doubt, the specification drawing decides — never the installer.

4. Why Distributors Must Get This Right
Distributors who stock both grades must ensure labels, TDS documents, and batch reports clearly distinguish them. Mislabeled or mixed stock creates site errors that end in contractor disputes and warranty claims — and ultimately fall on the distributor. Verify every batch: structural grade certification, weatherproof grade movement class, and both sets of test reports.
