Choose wrong and the joint fails in months; choose right and it lasts a decade. Deciding silicone vs polyurethane sealant for exterior joints comes down to three questions: exposure, paint and movement. Here is the practical breakdown.
Two Chemistries, Two Different Jobs
Silicone sealants cure by moisture release and stay flexible across extreme temperatures, with excellent UV resistance and very high movement capability. Polyurethane (PU) sealants cure to a tougher, abrasion-resistant rubber, bond aggressively to concrete and wood, and — critically — accept paint over the cured surface, which silicone never does.

Where Silicone Wins
Silicone is the right choice for glazing, curtain wall joints, glass-to-metal interfaces and any joint that sees full sun for years. It shrugs off UV without cracking or yellowing, holds its seal from -40°C to 150°C, and reaches movement classes 25 and 50 that PU cannot match in thin beads. If the joint will never be painted and exposure is harsh, silicone is the safe answer.

Where Polyurethane Wins
PU takes the job when the joint must be painted to disappear into the facade — concrete panel joints, precast, roofing and interior floor joints. It also bonds better to porous substrates like masonry and wood, and resists abrasion and foot traffic. The trade-offs: PU weathers poorly under direct UV without paint, has a shorter shelf life, and releases isocyanate during cure, which requires ventilation.

How to Choose in One Line
