Skin-Over Time vs Full Cure: What Sealant Curing Numbers Really Mean

A TDS lists several curing numbers — skin-over time, tack-free time, full cure — and distributors often assume they mean the same thing. They do not, and misreading them causes premature loading, damaged joints and warranty claims. This guide explains sealant skin over time vs full cure and how to apply each number on site.
The Three Stages of Curing
Every moisture-curing sealant passes through three stages. Skin-over time is when a thin film forms on the surface — dust will no longer stick, but the bead is still soft inside. Tack-free time is when the surface no longer sticks to a fingertip or clean plastic. Full cure is when the sealant reaches its design strength and movement capability, which for structural silicone can take up to 21 days at 23°C and 50% humidity.

Why Full Cure Takes Longer Than You Think
Curing is driven by moisture diffusing from the surface inward. The deeper the joint, the slower the middle cures. A joint that feels hard on day three can still be developing strength at day fourteen. That is why structural glazing specifications require a minimum cure period before loading — and why testing sealant adhesion before full cure gives misleading results.

Temperature and Humidity: The Two Levers
Both stages roughly double in speed for every 10°C rise — but only if humidity is present. Below 5°C or below 40% relative humidity, curing slows dramatically and can stall entirely on non-porous surfaces. In winter projects, plan for weeks, not days.

How to Read TDS Curing Data
Check whether the stated times were measured at 23°C/50% RH — the industry standard — and ask how the manufacturer tested skin-over time (some use a film thickness that cures faster than a real joint). For structural joints, never use skin-over time as the loading milestone; use full cure plus a safety margin.
